Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terrier Club

of Ireland

Recognised by the Irish Kennel Club since 1946

(before 1994 known as the International Softcoated Wheaten Terrier Club, of Ireland)

The Irish S.C.W.T Club has a moral obligation to defend the cultural heritage of the native Irish breeds, in particular the IRISH Softcoated Wheaten Terrier.

The Irish S.W.T Club is the only breed club allowed to propose changes to the Standard of the Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terrier. Once approved by the Irish Kennel Club and recognised by the F.C.I. this Standard will be have to be adhered to by all Kennel Clubs, Judges and show organising bodies in the F.C.I. member (and associated) countries.

To safeguard their task as "caretakers & guardians" the Irish S.W.T Club of Ireland appoints a President and Vice-Presidents in countries where Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terriers are present.

The President and the Vice-Presidents report on the breeds progress and other related matters to the Parent Club in Ireland.

Regularly information on the breed will be sent abroad to those in charge of events or otherwise involved with Softcoated Wheaten Terriers to prevent the loss of the original terrier type i.e. of the native Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terrier. Due to incorrect selection and breeding programmes combined with a large influx of alienated specimen from abroad that are called Wheatens but have no resemblance with the dogs described in the Irish Standard the appearance of the Irish Softcoated Wheaten terrier is threatened .

In the past Mrs. Maureen Holmes, one of the founders and for many years Hon. Secretary of the Irish S.W.T. Club, represented the Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terrier both at home and abroad.

She wrote two books on Wheatens, of which the last one "The Softcoated Wheaten Terrier", (1992) is a well known handbook for those interested in the history and the future of the breed.

She wrote many articles and critiques in dog magazines.

The Irish Standard together with an explanation of some points by Mrs. Maureen Holmes can be found at : the Irish Standard , Explanation .

More background information is to be found in the Compilation of Mrs. Maureen Holmes Speech for the Congress of Kennel Clubs, Dublin 1995, : Compilation.
