Poetry on the Road Maastricht

(Maastricht, 1945) has published six volumes of poetry, the first of which, Vlammend Marmer, came out in 1984. His latest collection is due to appear in the Fall of Ô96.

Recently H.C. ten Berge wrote about the poetry of Frans Budé: ÔThe poet dwells in a shelter created by himself, from which, protected to be sure, yet impressed by all sorts of observations, he observes and represents his own dreams, emotions and events, as well as the history of his strictly personal territory (the landscape, the city, the river, the culture of the surroundings). His poetry is not served by loudness; it is characterized by intimacy, intensity and a solid network of connections, underground as well as above ground. It finds itself in more than one way on the border and often engages in the no-man's land of dream, language and imagination. The shape it takes on upon its return, approaches the reader in a hesitant, veiled but also self-confident way. As is befitting of one who is veiled, it hides great passion, warmth and power.' (from: Vrouwen, jaloezie en andere ongemakken, 1996).

And Huub Beurskens remarked: ÔFrans Budé's poems are in fact contained hymns to the secrets around us, hymnal attempts to engage in a dialogue with those secrets.'

Frans Budé has performed in various festivals in Berlin, Vienna and Madrid, as well as Poetry International. For several years now he has also distinguished himself in the visual arts. There is an exhibition of his work at the Ultima Thule Gallery in Amsterdam from June 4 till August 4.
