Art touches architecture
in many different ways.
We know the architect
who designs and we know the designer who makes architecture. Le Corbusier
is not only the god of architecture but has also set his roots in design
and art. The French designer Philippe Starck has made his name in design,
in which a big diversity is to be noticed, but he has also set his name
in architecture.
This could be
seen as the multiplicity of the creator but also as the relation between
the one creator and the other. The relation is not only to be made from
architecture to design but I think to be made to art in general. For specification
I will name some of the expressions in creativity which should be considered
to be art; photography, sculpturing, graphic design, fashion, design, music,
painting, lighting, film.
In Amsterdam a society has been set up for creative professionals as advertisement makers, designers, graphic designers, fashion designers, photographers and architects. The purpose of this society, called ‘Baby’, is to take away the borders between the creative thoughts, combine them and let them work together. In this society, magazines, cult-films, books, computer software, internet, are available for the members as well as the portfolio’s from al the members.
The relation between
architecture and art can be specified for each art form.
The relation with
photography is purely a visual thing. It is what you see and how you react
to this. Photography can bring a lot of emotion: a funny picture, a scary
picture, a sad picture, a picture of life. But it is not only the comparing
of sight but it is also the use of photos in architecture. Philippe Starck
used pictures of the faces from his family, employees and friends to decorate
backseats of chairs. Architects like Rem Koolhaas and Jean Nouvel use picture-images
to decorate complete facades.
Sculpturing is linked in more than one way. It is giving a form. A form where can be looked at from different points and a form that can be touched, a form with a meaning. Architecture is giving form to a building. A lot of forms are given to buildings that do not have a direct relation with the function of that building. The creativity in architecture-forms has changed by new construction-technology and mainly by computer aided design.
Graphic design
comes in his relation close to one from photography. But what for me the
interest in graphic design is, is how to use different materials/colours
to fill a façade instead of paper. Using neon signs, brickwork,
structured concrete, printed glass, steel-plates and nature-stone, etc.
creating a composition.
