preface
This course examines the influence of the new media on architecture and the position of the architect in this new constellation. It questions the relation between concept and computer animation. In the announcement of this course the following statements are made:
These statements will be tested on designing an Institute for Biomimetec Research. Biomimetics is an effort to improve the design concepts of synthetic materials and systems through observation and adaptation of biological materials and design systems.
In the course we had a workshop lead by Ted Kruger and Marcus Novak. The statement below is from
Ted Kruger: "As we endeavor to increase functionality in the context of complex interactive systems, we can only do so by increasing the independence of the system- architecture will tend to become more autonomous. The requirement to cede control over our creations will fundamentally alter the design process."

Media is information energy. A research institute is all about collecting data.
Data is information. the institute is a power station.
FORUM volume 38 #4
" From the moment of its publication statistical information, as a combination of instrument and energy, sets in motion a circular process. Acts arise from the possibilities provided by statistical information but which, in their turn, produce more statistical information. The representation of space flowing from this interactive process of information and act no longer presents an objective reality that can be measured disinterestedly. Statistic reality becomes a temporary state, which changes under the infuence of its own representation. The representation of space becomes the instantaneous exposure of a process."
So how can we use a gigantic calculator, the computer, as a design tool and not as a drawing machine. As media is information energy the computer is the instrument to manipulate this energy. Department or workgroup

In my proposal for the institute i combine different information sources, melt them together and use them as an animation tool, into a virtual proposal for on of the test sites of the institute.
As the institute invests biological design concepts the design is not the making of something statical, but creating a process in which form can derive, a synernergitic process. In this case the organisation of a process where existing spatial models are transformed by infecting it with a virus.
The main idea for the institute is that in my opinion an institute is an active net-work that virtual and fysical space connects. It is a group of people, test-sides, buildings fysically spread over the world, connected too eachother in virtual space. The virtual is the most stable one, whereas the fysical is the most instable one. The test-sides, research teams and buildings differ per research question. biomimetics research is done in real-life situations.
Spatial models of existing buildings found on the internet represent the fysical conditions of the test-side. Artificial-life systems, L-systems represent the research requirements needed. L-systems is a modelling program based on the growth of plants and therefore well fit for using it as a tool for designing the biomimetic research institute. These life systems infect the 3d models. As a result a new spatial model is generated, which could be build as the fysical space needed on the test-side.
The choice which life system and which 3d model is used will be based upon the kind of research that will be done. In this course I used three kinds of life systems which represent earth, water and air. Each system has his own characteristics of growth and reproduction. The models I use represent the size of fysical space that is needed, small, large and extra large. Small is the Barcelona pavilion by Mies, Large is house 2 by Eisenmann and Extra Large is the Kimberwell Institute by Louis Kahn.
On this web site you can find my work on house 2 by Eisenman which will be used as a research site for earth-grow models. As a first investigation I worked on a searches for the possibilities of combining data and deriving form not by making statements but by organising a process which examines material behaviours and therefore gives endless possibilities for an active institute.
