From light-bulbs rectifier-tubes were made. Later the tube-amplifier was invented. In 1904 Fleming patented the diode rectifier/detector. The next development, the triode amplifier, was patented by Lee de Forest in 1906.

This EVN 171 from Telefunken appeared in 1914. It is an early triode tube which is factory made. It's construction is still primitive, it consists of:
- filament
- grit
- plate
Through the construction of this early tube we understand the naming of these components in later tubes.
